June 2, 2025. On my way to the conference between this building and Toronto City Hall early in the morning. One talk today, no ball games. https://flic.kr/p/2rbGibd
June 1, 2025. Today was fully occupied traveling by train to a hotel in Toronto (and working on presentation slides for the duration). Still on soft foods. https://flic.kr/p/2rbGD3o
May 31, 2025. Another backlogged post. I wasn't up to a long bike ride this Saturday, but I was able to get myself out for a short loop along the river. This is where the two rivers meet just east of Casselman. https://flic.kr/p/2rbDZxB
May 30, 2025. Catching up on backlog. It was a cool and rainy day for the preseason game in Ottawa. Eating only soft foods at a football game is depressing. https://flic.kr/p/2rbDDfc
June 16, 2025. Another quick training ride after work today, the usual 25 km loop to St. Albert. This is just south of Casselman looking southeast. T-33 days. https://flic.kr/p/2rbzCKo
June 17, 2025. New trailer arrived today from the Netherlands. After my aborted trial run in May, I decided I was putting too much trust in too few wheels, especially with the extra load required for questionable weather and a long excursion far from home. A lot of research later, I opted for a Radical Cyclone Trekking IV. Tested it on the Norco road bike while I'm still waiting for a new wheel after the issue I had in May. T-32 days. https://flic.kr/p/2rbz14r
May 29, 2025. This is an office complex at the corner of Blair Road and the 178, across from Gloucester Centre. I like this little office complex (though not the ugly parking garage). It's a little oasis in a seat of shopping rot (Costco, Walmart, Canadian Tire). https://flic.kr/p/2rbcFDK
May 28, 2025. The last two days were sick days. Today I was able to get out and - very gingerly - enjoy an ice cream on a short bike ride. https://flic.kr/p/2rbdzHS
May 26, 2025. If I've seemed a little distracted in the weeks since this 'daily' post was taken, it's because of the dental work I went through today. It's getting better, but it's a process. https://flic.kr/p/2rbdsB3
June 14, 2025. The old barn in Cannamore. Did a fast (for me) 61 km this afternoon under clear blue skies and a steady east wind. https://flic.kr/p/2raTL8h
May 26, 2025. Today was all about my visit to the dentist for some fairly involved work. Here I am before the operation, trying to be cool. I'm typing this after, so you know it all went OK. https://flic.kr/p/2r78Jn8
May 19, 2025. Another late upload. This is from the 'at least I'm riding' department. Even though my touring bike is down, I still have my road bike. This is a lonely stretch of road not far from St. Albert. https://flic.kr/p/2r7f23i
May 25, 2025. We went for a nice 7 km walk through the Mer Bleue forest today enjoying the mid-spring foliage. Lots of flowers, some insects, a few birds. https://flic.kr/p/2r6Zffm
May 17, 2025. Already shared on Mastodon but for everyone else, here's what happened to my bikepacking test run. It may have just been an over-inflated tire (I had issues with that with the same rim in 2023) or overloaded or both. In any case, the rim is done and I'm looking at plan B. https://flic.kr/p/2r5Bwt9
May 18, 2025. Wasn't biking today so we went into the city. Andrea bought a few things, including some stuff from he zoo that is the Hudson's Bay closing out fire sale. I didn't buy anything but just moped about a bit. Trying to stay positive. https://flic.kr/p/2r5FV1K
April 24,2025. Another late photo. This is a scene near the bridge over the Nation river east of Casselman. Another work-from-home day, which means I can spend two hours cycling instead of commuting. https://flic.kr/p/2r4eBNm
April 22, 2025. Another late photo. This is the view out the front door at the highway Starbucks where I stop for coffee on my commute to the office. That's the new Ford parts warehouse across the street. https://flic.kr/p/2r3W8fV
April 21, 2025. Catching up an old picture (I take the pictures, but then I don't upload them). This is from a nice Monday afternoon bike ride - this is what I get to do when I'm not spending two hours community to the office. https://flic.kr/p/2r3S4iN
May 9, 2025. We were in the rain and the cold tonight for Bloomafest at Mont Tremblant to see Charlotte Cardin and some other singers. Good show. A great way to finish the week and to welcome the spring. https://flic.kr/p/2r3KCBg
May 7, 2025. This rabbit was chilling just outside my back window. Just another work day in the office; created a useful diagram and recorded a useful livestream. https://flic.kr/p/2r3sHhQ
April 27, 2025. This is a beaver in the turtle pond having a fresh shoot for lunch. Photographed on our walk in the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. https://flic.kr/p/2r1drcn
April 26, 2025. Northern Flicker puttering around in the backyard. Andrea pointed it out to me not long after I spent several hours cycling in the rain, which normally would have been my photo for the day, but I couldn't pass up on this! https://flic.kr/p/2r14DYP
April 20, 2024. Ducks in the swamp in Monaghan Forest, in south-west Ottawa near Fallowfield. We went there for our hike today. It was nice, still very early spring conditions. A lot of it was still flooded. https://flic.kr/p/2qYScGg
April 19, 2025. Small creet where it crosses the back road just north of St. Albert. The turquoise water is a sure sign it's all snow melt. Went for a 25 km ride today - planned to go further, but found I just didn't have the energy to battle the strong wind more than 10 km. Typical April cycling. https://flic.kr/p/2qYFUGY
March 29, 2025. This is a typical supper for me. Salmon with kumatos, scallions, and my home-made curry (garlic, oil, peppers, spices, onions, tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms, eggplant, rutabaga). The asparagus is extra, because we got it in our OddBunch shipment this week. https://flic.kr/p/2qYDwWs
April 18, 2025. The sky put on a show today as I went out for my fourth ride of the year, a 40 km jaunt to St. Isadore and back. This was along Concession Road 19 near Ste. Rose. It was a bit cool with a light rain. https://flic.kr/p/2qYy8uR
April 13, 2025. A stretch of boardwalk on the Lime Kiln train where we went for our Sunday hike. The trail is in the west end, just off Moodie Drive. It's a rocky area alternating between swamp and cedar forest, and was the victim of a forest fire in 2012 (hence all the dead trees in one part of it). Beautiful spring day. https://flic.kr/p/2qXAKZ6
April 12, 2025. Little swampy pond just north of the village of Crysler. Git out for a 37 km ride today on a cool day with a brisk wind. Not bad for my second ride of the year, but I look forward to being in better shape for some longer rides. https://flic.kr/p/2qXonqR
April 11, 2025. We took Julia to the vet at noon today for her annual checkup. Normally we would take her with the other cats, but she was well entrenched under the bed and not budging, so we had to reschedule. All is fine with the cats, and they've had their vaccines updated. Because we care. https://flic.kr/p/2qXnBbb
April 10, 2025. Liiking back at the admin building from near the parking lot where I work. The snow from the previous day is melting in an unusual patchy style. https://flic.kr/p/2qXmkcY
April 8, 2025. We had a crisis in our house yesterday - the old reliable microwave died. So first thing today we were out to get a replacement - this, a new microwave, exactly like the old microwave. https://flic.kr/p/2qWWwDq
April 7, 2025. It was still a bit cold but I managed to get out for my first bike ride of the season. Thanks to winter work on the trainer I had no difficulty cycling 25 km, just need to figure out how to keep my head warm. It was 6 degrees - I don't expect it to be this cold in Iceland, but it could be, so I need to be ready. https://flic.kr/p/2qWzpkV
March 25, 2025. Still very late uploading photos. This is the Pine Grove forest trail on our regular Sunday walk. Still a lot of snow and difficult to navigate. https://flic.kr/p/2qWr224
March 22, 2025. I'm so late posting my daily photos. I'm uploading this April 7. This is me playing with Char on a Saturday morning. Planned to upload a Caturday photo. It never happened. https://flic.kr/p/2qWqYii
Match 21, 2025. I attended the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization conference at Carleton today. I felt a bit like an outsider but it was important to me to listen firsthand to what people had to say. Interestingly, going to the conference made me feel better for the rest of the day - not because people are still struggling to achieve EDID, but just to see people who are interested and passionate about this work. It's quite the contrast from my day-to-day. https://flic.kr/p/2qTQK2u
March 18, 2025. Emma now spends a lot of her time with me in my home office while I'm working. Her assistance is not limited to sitting on my lap. https://flic.kr/p/2qTSyMg
March 16, 2024. Andrea walking along Pine Grove Trail in Ottawa's greenbelt. With predictions of heavy rain we thought it would be a great test of my wet weather gear for my Iceland ride. But instead it was warm (11 degrees) and hardly rained at all. The footing was difficult on the snow. But it was a nice walk. https://flic.kr/p/2qSGwr9
March 13, 2025. This is a forest near my house; I took a quick photo as I passed by on my (so-called) daily walk. Casselman is rapidly being developed so the forest probably won't last long. https://flic.kr/p/2qSqET9
March 12, 2025. Emma (black) and Char (orange) sleeping side by side in Andrea's chair. Emma has been in poor health lately, which is worrying to us. https://flic.kr/p/2qSvTGC
March 11, 2025. This is my bicycle on the stand at Joe Mamma Cycles; Julia is giving a look while Hype is serving another customer. The plan is to prepare it for Iceland. It's going to come out of the shop looking quite different from what it did going in. https://flic.kr/p/2qSvtuD
March 10, 2025. It snowed overnight and this was the result, as seen from my basement window facing the backyard. Fortunately today was a work-from-home day so I didn't have to experience the traffic, which was a mess. https://flic.kr/p/2qSua9q
March 2, 2025. Larose forest in the March afternoon sun on a chilly cold day. Hopefully the last cold cold day of the year. I'm beginning the feel the possibilities of cycling. https://flic.kr/p/2qPGKKd
February 28, 2025. This is a tree along the side of Blair Road here in Ottawa. It's not as distinctive of the maple but the shape will be recognizable to anyone who lives in the north. I see hundreds of them every day, and they remind me of where I'm most grounded. https://flic.kr/p/2qPghAo
February 27, 2025. This is the view outside my office window today. As you can see, winter isn't letting us go just yet. We're in for more snow and cold over the next couple of weeks. This is always the hardest time of the year to stay positive. https://flic.kr/p/2qPbaex
