Rocks

Image
March 29, 2018. This is a section of road just past the Alexandra Bridge seen as I drove home from Gatineau. I spent the morning preparing for a workshop and the afternoon doing the workshop, and the evening watching the Blue Jays season opener (about which the less said the better). https://flic.kr/p/FY1KGi

The Nest

Image
March 28, 2018. We drove back home today and I got some work done and took a photo of this nest in our lilac bush (no eggs in it yet). https://flic.kr/p/Hsozz5

Olympic Stadium

Image
March 27, 2018. I was still basking in the afterglow of the great Vlady Guerrero Jr. home run when I took this shot. We went for a wonderful visit to the Montreal botanical gardens and them watched a tense pitchers' duel between the Blue Jays and the Cardinals that ended on the best possible note. https://flic.kr/p/24vzn1o

Autographs

Image
March 26, 2018. Toronto Blue Jay Curtis Granderson signs autographs about five feet from where I was sitting. No, I didn't get an autograph - he has really limited time so I left that for the kids. https://flic.kr/p/22Qo17Q

Polly

Image
March 25, 2018. Polly is the old lady of our household. Now 15, she is as quiet as ever, skittish, but always willing to come out to be petted as I leave the house. Today is bike tune-up day (maybe I'll get out for a few kilometers this afternoon) and doing some writing before heading out tomorrow. https://flic.kr/p/Hm5Wsj

Lexi

Image
March 24, 2018. Happy Caturday! This is Lexi, our cat with the perpetual expression that says "I don't really understand what's going on." She actually stopped me from uploading this so I could play string games with her (note: she's 12 years old). Quiet day today listening to the ball game, playing Cities Skyline, and getting to Inbox Zero. https://flic.kr/p/247SGQD

Melting

Image
March 23, 2018. Friday odds and ends at work - my performance review, doing timesheets, completing an online course (page-turner on security), planning for a project, answering email, and getting ready for some time mostly away from the office. These are trees between two buildings at NRC, and as you can see winter is slowly letting go of its grip. https://flic.kr/p/Hm4Zgh

Ceiling Fan

Image
March 21, 2018. This is actually the most unused appliance in the house, as we have both heating and air conditioning, and so don't need a big ceiling fan. But there it is. Today's routine was disrupted by an argument over working conditions - apparently I haven't been productive enough over the last 15 years and require closer management and supervision. https://flic.kr/p/22D4yLG

Bulldozer

Image
March 20, 2018. I snapped this through the car window while waiting for construction to clear up on the Casselman bridge. It's not much of a photo but I had a pretty busy day today preparing slides and participating in a workshop at the School of Public Service. https://flic.kr/p/25mHAQK

Crabapple

Image
March 19, 2018. The crabapple tree pictured here had a pretty rough year last year; it caught some sort of fungus and most of the leaves shriveled and dropped. If it has another year like that it may be time for the wood chipper. As for myself, on this cold last day of winter I spent the day analyzing interview for data models. Not my favorite thing but I am learning things. https://flic.kr/p/22ALXSN

Yellow

Image
March 18, 2018. Another day spent quietly watching baseball and playing video games. It was also Andrea and my 20th wedding anniversary. https://flic.kr/p/22y78fL

Reaching Toward the Light

Image
March 17, 2018. This is a geranium in the kitchen window reaching toward the light. Rest day today, spent watching the Jays win and messing around on the computer. https://flic.kr/p/Hbj9Lw

Centre of Town

Image
March 16, 2018. This is the stop light at the centre of town (there's another one out by the highway and that's about it). I spent the day analyzing interviews and working on the data model. Tiring work. https://flic.kr/p/FzwpYi

Ceiling

Image
March 15, 2018. This is the ceiling at Costco. I was under it to pick up some groceries after a day in the office spent analyzing interviews and developing data models. https://flic.kr/p/H6cPQh

More March Snow

Image
March 14, 2018. I had to take the back roads into the office today because the highway was clogged; this is a scene from those back roads. I had a couple of interviews for my project. https://flic.kr/p/25bxtap

More March Snow

Image
March 13, 2018. I pulled off the highway and onto a side road on the way in to the office this morning to capture this image. Meetings today, with a presentation on ethics in autonomous and intelligent software at the end of one of them. https://flic.kr/p/FuUpdB

Jellybeans

Image
March 12, 2018. So tired today. And the Jays lost. I hate time changes. https://flic.kr/p/245kUvW

Keyboard

Image
March 11, 2018. I finished my blockchain module today and uploaded the code to GitHub. I also wrote a quick article describing what I learned doing this. From where I sit, doing this was much better than any course would have been, and I got an in-depth understanding of blockchain over a weekend. https://flic.kr/p/22mnC5S

Our North Star

Image
March 10, 2018. When we moved into the house a few years ago it was empty except for this star at the highest point in the centre of the house. We left it as it is. I like it but I never really knew what it was. I still don't - but now after taking this picture I realize it's wire mesh, not cloth as I had always thought. Spent the day watching the Blue Jays win and working on my blockchain code. It's a challenge to make all the pieces work together but there's nothing about it I don't understand. I'll upload it as a stand-alone Perl module when I'm done. https://flic.kr/p/FpA4ar

March Mist

Image
March 9, 2018. After two days of snow we got warmer temperatures and this mist first thing in the morning today. It was gone by the time I finished breakfast. In the office, I spent the day building a Perl version of a blockchain engine. It doesn't work yet, but it was a great exercise to learn the concept at the deepest levels. You can read for a year and not learn blockchain engines as well as you do by building one. https://flic.kr/p/GUifH9

County Road

Image
March 8, 2018. Stopped for gas on the way home taking exit 79 instead of the usual exit 66. I like driving along the country road sometimes (I've measured and the time difference is less than a minute), Another quiet day though I did enjoy listening to the ball game this afternoon - Bo Bichet and Vlad Guerrero Jr. both had their first appearances in a Blue Jays uniform (albeit in spring training). https://flic.kr/p/23VHLZo

Snow in March

Image
March 7, 2018. It was snowing and the highway was pretty bad so I took Anderson and stopped briefly to take this quick photo in Mer Bleu. Another typical quiet day today - a little coding, a little writing. https://flic.kr/p/FmkQY8

Croquantes

Image
March 5, 2018. There's a lot to ponder about in this display of granola bars at Costco. Why is one in English? Why is one skinnier than the rest? Who thought of a design that overlaps stacked boxes? My visit to Costco followed a day of working on JSON files and arguing about time entry provisions. Because, you know, I don't work hard enough. https://flic.kr/p/23zbwsF

Sunset and Wires

Image
March 4, 2018. Another day working on the gRSShopper harvester, and I actually uploaded some code to github as the stand-alone improvements were worth sharing. This is the view from the front door in the evening, more of an orange glow than a sunset. https://flic.kr/p/228NUoG

Light

Image
March 3, 2018. I spent the day working on the harvester. There's not a lot of progress to show for a full day's work, but it looks nicer. I encountered some very tricky problems that turned out to be a lot of fun to solve. Good thing, because some of them took an hour. Completely forgot to take a photo, so this is my bedside lamp, taken at the very end of the day. https://flic.kr/p/FdSedg

Tree

Image
March 2, 2018. Another typical day in the office today. A lot of work; no tangible results. On the way home in the evening light, as you can see from this photo of a tree. https://flic.kr/p/23Kkt6G

The Side of a House

Image
March 1, 2018. Another typical day, just like yesterday. This is a view outside the car window as I waited at the stop light on Blair Road at Ogilvie. Still waiting for the green. Trying not to be fooled by the record high temperatures into believing that it's spring. https://flic.kr/p/F9q2Jk

South Nation River

Image
February 28, 2018. Some meetings, some coding and some writing, all in all a pretty average day. It's still light when I get home now. Almost light. This was the scene at the river here in Casselman. https://flic.kr/p/F9pJNB
