Mountain Ash

Image
September 19, 2018. I finally finished editing and revising a long-overdue paper today, so yay. That and some reading and an online meeting and that was my day. This is a young mountain ash in our back yard. https://flic.kr/p/2baJ1xU

Pondering

Image
September 18, 2018. Greg Marlin spends a moment or two pondering before presenting a Node-React-Neo4J application at the Graph Meetup on the sixth floor of the Shopify offices in downtown Ottawa. Of course the demo did not go as planned, but that was great, because we got to see his thought process and live coding. Can't wait to download and play with the code when it's available on Git. https://flic.kr/p/2baHmXJ

Almost Fall

Image
September 17, 2018. I was pretty sleepy today and didn't get a whole lot done (sort of makes up for working all day yesterday, I guess). I puttered in APIs and stuff, ran into roadblocks, but at least did a good newsletter. This is the scene in our back yard this evening as the leaves are beginning to turn. https://flic.kr/p/P3BWrA

Grasshopper

Image
September 16, 2018. I had a day of rest after yesterday's long ride, watching the ball game and puttering about. I put up the grsshopper.downes.ca website, so today's photo of a grasshopper in our back yard is especially appropriate. https://flic.kr/p/28opzbw

Century

Image
September 15, 2016. I cycled more than 100km today - a 'century' - south through Avonmore to the Long Sault Parkway on the St. Lawrence River and back up through Finch. 106 km total. It was very hot, peaking at around 29C. https://flic.kr/p/28mjgmf

Morning Light

Image
September 14, 2018. This is what the back yard looked like at 7 this morning, the Sun rising behind a morning mist. https://flic.kr/p/29GgaQD

Fridge Door

Image
September 13, 2018. This is the fridge door, and yes, it's from today, not 2016. The paper butterflies are getting very old and fragile - I bought them at a table in a mall in St. Albert on the way home from the north country some time in 1991. https://flic.kr/p/29Z6YHU

Treat Ball

Image
September 12, 2018. The idea of a treat ball is that it should be difficult for the cat to get at the treat. It then plays and bats the ball around the room. Our cats, however, have become experts at extracting treats from the treat balls, to the extent that they're just temporary storage locations for kibbles that will eventually be left on the floor, to be eaten at their leisure. We would discontinue the treat ball and just go with the bowl - but the cats won't let us. https://flic.kr/p/NWTqL7

Hostas

Image
September 11, 2018. One of the nice things about work recently is that I've had the time and space to do some serious learning. Today was a case in point as I tackled WebMentions and wrote some standard-compliant functions. The real outcome here isn't the programming, though, it's the learning I did to complete the programming. These are hosta flowers in the evening light on the front lawn. https://flic.kr/p/2aZv5Z4

A Spider's Home

Image
September 10, 2018. It was cold and rainy today, not a pleasant day at all. Good day to be working, which I did, learning how to produce Accelerated Mobile Pages. This photo is from our front yard and features a spider in her home (if you look closely you can see her tucked away in the tunnel). https://flic.kr/p/29zanLr

Harvest Festival

Image
September 9, 2018. 25x50 Day 25. I reached my target of 2000km for the year today, cycling 53 to Dunvegan and back. There I discovered the annual Harvest Festival in full swing. Cool and cloudy and windy, it felt like fall. https://flic.kr/p/29x8neF

The Ladderarians - 3

Image
September 8, 2018. The weather today was crisp and brilliantly clear, which made for a slightly cool but excellent day of cycling. I had hurt my back in Montreal and wasn't sure I'd be OK, but I was good for a 60km ride, leaving me only 30km from my goal. But more, I felt really good, and with the air so clear everything looked extra brilliant. https://flic.kr/p/29vjJXR

Drinking Time

Image
September 7, 2018. I was pretty tired after my very long day yesterday. Even so, I got a few things done. But mostly it was me dragging myself through the day. This is lexi in the evening having a drink. If that tap looks new, it should - it was chosen and installed by Andrea a few weeks ago. https://flic.kr/p/NL18zL

Picasso

Image
September 6, 2018. I caught the 6:30 train out of Ottawa this morning (which meant I left home at 5:30) to Montreal to catch an event. In the afternoon I had some time so I hit the Picasso exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. I'm uploading this on the train back this evening. Long day. https://flic.kr/p/2aQfyJX

Marvelville

Image
September 5, 2018. 25x50 Day 23. Today started out with a dental appointment. That went pretty well, so I decided to take the rest of the day as a personal day and cycle to Marvelville on what was probably the last really nice day of the year. https://flic.kr/p/29GTwuG

No Parking

Image
September 4. This is a parking spot for plug-in vehicles, and a no parking sign. They shut off the power last week. NRC had three plug-in spots at my building when I bought my plug-in car in July, but now we're down to zero. It's ridiculous. There's no coherent story. I've heard three separate versions. It shouldn't be such a big deal; I've been asking about it since February and we've only moved backwards. Anyhow. Put this photo in the fail blog. https://flic.kr/p/2aLvSLT

Work

Image
September 3, 2018. Alternative title: 'grazing the cedum fields'. No ride today with tightness in my calf, but I'm only three rides away from my target. So I spent the day working on the gRSShopper reader application. Just like this bee, working on the newly flowering cedum. https://flic.kr/p/27YK6KJ

What's At Stake

Image
September 2, 2018. I spent another day cycling out in the country and this time ended up at the North Stormont Fair in Newington. As I cycle through the farms and talk with the people at the fair, I can't help but think that this part of Ontario - the dairy industry and the people it supports - is what some trade negotiators want to destroy. These people and their livelihood - this is what's at stake. I hope our negotiators don't forget that. https://flic.kr/p/LWAMGp

The Crossing

Image
September 1, 2018. Mostly a rest day today. I did a 50 km ride to Avonmore and back. This is a railway crossing near Avonmore. https://flic.kr/p/LUDHvz

End of August

Image
August 31, 2018. It was pretty quiet in the office today, not surprisingly the day before the long weekend, and so I was able to work without too many distractions - though I did have a few informal meetings with the other die-hards in the office. In the evening I got my rebuilt bicycle wheel back. I took this with my phone on the way home - it's the Nation River in the sunset just west of town. https://flic.kr/p/27U9UJh

Evening Light

Image
August 30, 2018. I was up early to finish my presentation for today (because of yesterday's distractions) and spent almost five hours with clients outlining distributed ledger technologies. It was a good day but a lot of work. https://flic.kr/p/LU43Pp

Alex

Image
August 29, 2018. I had a couple of good meetings today, but the space in between was filled with frustrating and pointless distractions. Also, I working on my presentation for tomorrow. This is Alex, looking sympathetic. https://flic.kr/p/27S9yEw

Spider

Image
August 28, 2018. Today I spent some time trying to get my laptop to work on the network and some time working on the content viewer. This is a spider Andrea found in the back yard. https://flic.kr/p/29eMFyZ

Polly

Image
August 27, 2018. Spent the day tracking down some tricky code issues. Got home tired and feeling like I hadn't really accomplished a lot. Oh - but Claude showed me where the air conditioning i in my office so it's no longer a heatbox. https://flic.kr/p/27S94Vs

Pride

Image
August 26, 2018. We attended the Pride parade in Ottawa ready to brave the rains that never came. I have dozens and dozens of colorful photos that I'll post later. Meanwhile, here's one from Bank Street just after the parade. https://flic.kr/p/2auzHnR

St. Elmo's Friar

Image
August 25, 2018. 25x50 Day 20. Cycled to Maxville and back via St. Elmo (pictured here) and Moose Creek. This is the St Elmo's Presbyterian Church. I walked around it... it needs some rehab work. https://flic.kr/p/2anncay

John, Paul, George and Ringo

Image
My contribution to the mashup challenge titled John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Cat's in the Bag

Image
August 24, 2018. I was downtown this morning to review a funding proposal, then back in the office for the afternoon to finish the work on gRSShopper. This is Lexi, the cat in the bag. https://flic.kr/p/27FSRV5

Spoon and Bowl

Image
August 23, 2018. Spent the day completely focused on a problem. Didn't get to taking a photo until late. This is my spoon and bowl. https://flic.kr/p/27FRw4y

Wet Cat

Image
August 22, 2018. Was up to Plantagenet in the morning to launch a project, and then worked from the home office this afternoon. That's how I spotted the neighbour cat lurking in our back yard. I really like working in the home office; I wish I could do it more. https://flic.kr/p/LFK7hK

Crabapple Tree

Image
August 21, 2018. This is the crabapple tree in the back yard, looking much better this year than it did last year. Somewhere in the e is the goldfinch nest. https://flic.kr/p/2arz2Da

Forest Edge

Image
August 20, 2018. Falling behind in uploading photo of the day - catching up. Today - Monday - was busy; things are heating up again. Mostly work on gRSShopper. https://flic.kr/p/2amznSN

Curran

Image
August 19, 2018. 25x50 Day 19. Another beautiful day for cycling and I went almost 70km to Curran and back. This is the Paroisse St-Luc in Curran. https://flic.kr/p/2abc4wd

Vultures

Image
August 18, 2018. 25x50 Day 18. I didn't notice them at first but there are two vultures on the roof of this abandoned pioneer home at Glenburn.I cycled 73km to the Ottawa River at Wendover, the first time I've made it to a river from home. https://flic.kr/p/N6bkJE

Praying Mantis

Image
August 17, 2018. Got some work done on the gRSShopper content reader and also some blockchain research. This is a praying mantis that appeared on our doorstep. https://flic.kr/p/296ttBq

Damselfly

Image
August 15, 2018. This beauty (specifically, a male male marsh bluet (Enallagma ebrium) damselfly) was hovering around the back yard. Today was a warm damp day I spent catching up on paperwork, doing blockchain research, and following ball games - a so-so game between the Tigers and the Chisox and a thriller between the Mariners and the As (still in extra innings as I type). https://flic.kr/p/27ntNPu

The Chrysalis

Image
August 14, 2018. Today wasn't a very good day. Not because I got nothing done - I actually got quite a bit done. But there was the fire alarm and I got wet waiting out in the rain and I was really tired in the evening and I couldn't get my photo taken properly. Just - one of those days. This is the replacement photo taken the following day so you don't have to look at a blurry chrysalis. https://flic.kr/p/28Kg3Rt

Boneset

Image
August 13, 2018. This is a newcomer to our back yard this year. "Eupatorium perfoliatum or boneset is a common North American perennial plant in the aster family." Today was a beautiful summar day; sadly, I spent most of it in an office. https://flic.kr/p/28FYvax

Autumn Joy

Image
August 12, 2018. It's not autumn yet, and that's why these sedum flowers have not yet turned pink. But they're getting close. Today was a wipeout - I was up till 2:00 a.m. after the football game, and up early, and took a nap, and went to bed early - did a little blockchain research, that's it. https://flic.kr/p/28FYcVH

Caledonia Road

Image
August 11, 2018. It was a beautiful day for a ride Saturday and I took advantage of a light wind and cool tempratures to post my best speed of the year. Then, in the evening, we watched our RedBlacks defeat Johnny Football. https://flic.kr/p/28Ywqxq

Elderberries

Image
August 10, 2018. You have to look closely but there are nascent elderberries growing here in the red twigs that used to hold white flowers. Had a couple meetings, got a new CPAP mask, and worked on gRSShopper Chatter until the internet dies at the office. https://flic.kr/p/27eASKQ

King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

Image
August 9, 2018. Tomatos grown from seed at the homestead. They are small but they are delicious. Today I made a lot of progress on the gRSShopper 'Chatter' feature. Otherwise, it was an ordinary day. https://flic.kr/p/28AaMjR

Common Ringlet

Image
August 8, 2018. Another workday. I spent some time working the bugs out of the gRSShopper initialization script. Also did some work with the newsletter RSS-MailChimp setup. This is a common ringlet butterfly from the front yard. https://flic.kr/p/27bB8SG

Japanese Beetles

Image
August 7, 2018. It was back-to-work day today, wading through 500+ emails and sitting in on a meeting. This is a pair of Japanese Beetles getting it on in our back yard. https://flic.kr/p/LbsVxK

Tent Caterpillars

Image
August 6, 2018. I put the back wheel from my old bike onto my new bike and was able to get out for a 57km ride. Sadly, I also had two flat tires (but these had nothing to do with the switch). It was *very* hot so I didn't pause a lot for photos. This was the most interesting thing to see where I sat in the shade for a while eating a grapefruit and drinking water. https://flic.kr/p/29SK7jF

White Coneflowers

Image
August 5, 2018. These are backyard flowers, which means a day spent inside. Today I worked on installing Mastodon's perl module (failed), setting up boxes with Zeit Now (partial success), watching a Champions game online (success) and a Jays game (loss). Also did a bit more reading on blockchain. https://flic.kr/p/29QRDFZ

The Bridge at Berwick

Image
August 4, 2018. Cycled 55km to Finch and back, pausing only briefly to photograph this scene in Berwick and to adjust when my spokes popped - twice! *sigh* https://flic.kr/p/29NVGTV

Free Learning

Image
DS106 Daily Create (it's been too long).

The Ladderarians - 2

Image
August 3, 2018. 25x50 Day 14. This time my ride was successful and I did a loop around Larose Forest through Bourget and Limoges. Part of my intent was to visit Village Gagnon, a local historical site, to document this Ladderarian cross. I also took a whole set of Village Gagnon photos. https://flic.kr/p/28psRxH

Little Tomatoes

Image
August 2, 2018. I headed out on my bike ride and lost a spoke not even 4km in. The bike shop replaced it under warranty, but it was a lost day. Here are our tomatoes beginning to bear fruit. I agree that I should have spaced them out more, but on the bright side, the thicket is self-supporting, so I don't need special wire mesh or stands. https://flic.kr/p/272uBTu
