Canadian Tire

Image
July 31, 2014. A rubber washer in our shower head is broken and so we have water leaking, which means a trip to Canadian Tire for a replacement (and then to Kent, and finally Home Hardware, because Canadian Tire didn't have one the right size). from Flickr http://ift.tt/1nPy3ba

Moncton Under Glass

Image
July 30, 2014. This is Moncton downtown viewed from the university campus. I see this scene every day on my ride home from work. I took the picture this time because I liked the contrast between the clouds and the grass. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1xHrVCR

Potentilla

Image
July 29, 2014. These hardy plants are just outside the office, and no, the bugs in them were not planted by the Chinese. See if you can find the lucky six-petaled Potentilla. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1zsuZp4

Lilies

Image
July 28, 2014. From my front garden, these orange lilies glow in the dark. I rarely use the flash, but when I do, it's at night. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1nUxSem

Pointe-du-Chêne

Image
July 27, 2014. These two visitors were enjoying the sunshine at Pointe-du-Chêne wharf, talking to people fishing off the pier and looking out over the ocean. For me, it was a 70 km ride today, at an average speed of 21 kph, to the ocean and back. I definitely need a softer bicycle seat. Bonus photo of Shediac Bay. from Flickr http://ift.tt/UE76v6

Rum Road

Image
July 26, 2014. First longish ride on the bike, 50 km in which I managed an average speed of 20 kmph for the first time ever, despite a brutal wind. This is the view from Homestead Road looking out over a small creek and Rum Road in the background. The bike ran well; I need better pedals, a slight adjustment to the seat, and I miss my speedometer - need that. And maybe a bell. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1nJR3ZP

ACE Room

Image
Juky 25, 2014. So here I am opening up the ACE room - 'Advanced Conferencing Environment' - for another program meeting. Screens still dark, coffee cup still full, logging in and setting up. Just 7 km on the bike today but a very fast 7 km. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1nEk1bV

Bicycle

Image
July 24, 2014. My new bicycle, on my front lawn. I've been looking recently for one, and seriously since test-riding Simon Walker's in Greenwich. The planning came together today as I bought home my new Specialized 20-speed road bike (p.s. my front lawn is looking great right now too; it's a tiny verdant ecosystem of trees, bushes and flowers). from Flickr http://ift.tt/Ur4jFW

Parliament at a Glance

Image
July 23, 2014. Busy busy busy day today. Got my visa applications in for two upcoming trips this fall, and had a longish meeting with safety and security representatives in the afternoon. Flying home in the evening. This is Parliament Hill from the taxi - the changing of the guard was on, something I've never seen despite years of living in Ottawa, and while it wouldn't have been nice to stop and smell the roses, time was my enemy (p.s. also had a longish visit to Ottawa's Queensway). from Flickr http://ift.tt/1qB4Kw3

Dental Office

Image
July 21, 2014. I went to the dentist first thing in the morning, got a trailer hitch on my car (for carrying my bicycle) and did some meetings in the afternoon. This is the dental office. I love the classic 'look of disapproval' I'm getting in my photo. Photos are just snapshots, but they can be so revealing as well. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1yVH06o

Fishing the Petitcodiac

Image
July 20, 2014. Nice 88km bike ride taking the long way to Petitcodiac and back. En route I spotted this person fishing in the Petitcodiac River just near River Glade. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1riaiJS

Mosaiq

Image
July 19, 2014. Back home at last and just in time for the city's annual Mosaiq festival - it's basically a celebration of the city's different cultures. I always enjoyed Edmonton's massive Heritage Festival, so I have high hopes for Moncton's version over time. This year's was pretty good, far better than I've seen in the past for Moncton. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1wKfe9L

Gatineau

Image
July 18, 2014. I went across the river to downtown Gatineau to give a short presentation to staff at Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, the branch that used to be CIDA. This part of the city has really matured over the years and is now a clean and pleasant urban core well worth a visit. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1k261K5

Hotel Room

Image
July 17, 2014. Three days of financial systems training complete - tired, under the weather, doing nothing but watching Big Bang Theory on TV. So much for my ambitions of an Ottawa bike ride. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1lfF3sS

Remnants

Image
July 16, 2014. The gardens at our offices in Ottawa haven't seen tending for a number of years, from the look of them, but that doesn't prevent some of the hardier flowers from thriving amidst tufts of grass and 3-year old mulch. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1wwQUZ6

Nighttime Ottawa

Image
July 15, 2014. First day back from Britain in Ottawa an all day class on financial management systems. Not much time for a photo; this is from my hotel room. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1oYaP1I

Terminal 2

Image
Juy 14, 2014. I took the high speed train in fron canterbury, and then the Picadilly line to London's new Terminal 2 at Heathrow airport. And... it wasn't awful. It was really very nice. And without the interminable delays that are usually associated with a visit to Heathrow. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1mD19tM

Folkestone

Image
July 13, 2014. My second day cycling in Kent. This time I went to the birthplace of my maternal grandmother, Folkestone. I was surprised to see how closely their flag resembles that of New Brunswick, where I now live. But I love the little men on the Folkestone ship. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1mD19dm

Blean

Image
July 12, 2014. This glorious field lines the cycle track near Blean, and was seen as I cycled from Canterbury through the Crab and Winkle Line trail to Whitstable, on the coast, and then along the coast to Hearn Bay, and then back through Broad Oak to Canterbury. Not bad for a late afternoon cycle. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1n32kUH

Canary Wharf

Image
July 11, 2014. After I gave my paper and had my meetings I was able to take a few hours and go across the river to visit Canary Wharf. It was about what you would expect - new, fake, and full of rich people living to excess. A security guard yelled at me for taking photos. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1mHi2D8

Buckingham Palace

Image
July 10, 2014. I had to return to the city to retrieve my power cord, but I was planning to go for a walk anyway, so it all worked out OK. I decided that it was time I saw Buckingham Palace. It didn't disappoint, I must say. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1jvel4C

London School of Economics

Image
July 9, 2014. I went into the city to give my presentation at the LSE today, and on the way in I saw this. I guess the "more intelligent than you" is a thing at LSE. Anyhow, it set me a bit on edge. The phrasing 'more intelligent' suggests a genetic predisposition, which I find offensive. I did find the garbage can appropriately located. Anyhow, I think I went in and represented the rest of us well. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1rZlXPf

PapalMayhem

Image
July 8, 2014. This may seem like the Pope wandering around on the grounds of the University of Greenwich, but it's actually an actor in the newest Sacha Baron Cohen film being shot on the caampus. Today was the day for my Open Content talk - tomorrow, networked personal learning, from Flickr http://ift.tt/TSDDgE

Greenwich Park

Image
July 7, 2014. This elegant deer behind a wire fence was found in the 'wild areas' of Greenwich Park (which for the record is one of the nicest parks I have ever seen). from Flickr http://ift.tt/1rScsBi

Greenwich

Image
January 6, 2014. Landed in England and several train rides later was in Greenwich. It was a beautiful sunday afternoon, the flea market was open, and I took a short tour around the immediate vicinity before getting a good long night's sleep. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1kvR25h

Argo Notes

Image
July 5, 2015. I left for England a day ahead of Hurricane Arthur and had an unexpected day in Toronto, part of hwich I spent watching the Argonauts football game, after which we were treated to a celebratory concert by the Argo-Notes (who played up a storm during the game as well). Sorry Saskatchewan, your Riders were trounced by the home team and a great time was had by all. from Flickr http://ift.tt/Vz00ZT

Mementos

Image
July 2, 2014. One the shelf in the living room, mementos. From left to right: the gavel from my days as GSA President 1989-91, a sand dollar from my first trip with Andrea to San Francisco (we celebrated the millenium at the Embarcadero), blocks of wood from a trade show, a troll of Andrea's, the Star Trek wedding day figurines we were given when we were married, 1998, a tiny Empire Statye Building from my first visit to New York, 2001, a King Kong from my Hallowe'en costume (I was dressed as the Empire State Building), 1983, and Syabona water bottles from my trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa, 2006. As time goes by and I accumulate these experiences, I amass a set of brilliant brilliant memories, and for now, at least, I remember everything, like it was yesterday. from Flickr http://ift.tt/VKEqCb

Making Honey

Image
July 3, 2014. This is a photo from outside the office. This is actually a weed, but it looks beautiful to both the bee and me. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1lF5SpK

Hilltop

Image
July 1, 2014. Happy Canada Day. This is the side of Homestead Road at the top of the hill (Steeve's Mountain) overlooking the Petitcodiac River Valley, with a warning to slow down and be careful on this holiday. from Flickr http://ift.tt/V9OlAE

Silent Repose

Image
June 30, 2014. Good day for a bike ride in the afternoon. I went up the two large hills on Homestead Road from the end of Mountain Road and then back from Salisbury up the Salisbury Road. Bright sun, strong wind. This small forest with its silent inhabitant is right at the western end of Moncton city limits, where the 'Salisbury 11' sign is. It's a quiet beautiful spot that I take note of every time I pass this way. from Flickr http://ift.tt/TzMdRh
