Creeping Phlox

Image
May 29, 2020. These flowers are overflowing out of the little garden right in front of the house. It was another scorcher today, and yet I was indoors all day working extra hard to get a bunch of stuff done https://flic.kr/p/2j6S3Bi

It's Dead, Jim

Image
May 28, 2020. More record-breaking heat, and our 13-year old air conditioning unit has died and has to be replaced. These pandemic days have been really hard - not on us, but on our house, which for some reason has chosen these few months to show the signs of wear. https://flic.kr/p/2j6zYW9

Emma and Charlemagne

Image
May 27, 2020. I had big plans for today but instead spent the day writing a blog post. Time well spent, though. It was too hot outside to cycle, so I stayed in and comforted out cats - pictured here are Emma (top) and Charlemagne (bottom). https://flic.kr/p/2j6zWZU

Lilacs

Image
May 26, 2020. The incredible heat wave continues. I made it out for a 25K ride in 33C heat. Today was otherwise planning and meeting day - I had sessions on Zoom, Teams and Meet. A multi-tool day. https://flic.kr/p/2j6CsKj

Crabapple Blossoms

Image
May 25, 2020. These are growing in our back yard. It was a bit cooler today so I took a rest day from cycling and focused on work - including exploring Deno and reading papers. https://flic.kr/p/2j5HS2S

Frog

Image
April 24, 2020. This is a frog I saved from being squashed by traffic by herding it from the road to a nearby wetland. Today's ride felt tougher even though it was only 55 km, but then I found I did it at a pace of 19.4 kph which explains that. It was very hot and mostly sunny (= 2.5 litres of water consumed en route). https://flic.kr/p/2j5kfF4

May Flowers

Image
May 23, 2020. I had a nice bounceback day today, cleaning my office to fight back against allergies, and doing a nice 66 km ride to Dunvegan (and a bit beyond) and back. My average speed was down to 17.2 kph, owing to the stiff breeze I was riding into, but I felt good the whole way. https://flic.kr/p/2j4VF1r

Grass and Trees

Image
May 22, 2020. I had a rough day today with allergies, and while I got a little writing done the day was mostly a write-off. This was the scene from the downstairs bathroom window at dusk. https://flic.kr/p/2j4Y2m5

Maple Seeds and Flower

Image
May 21, 2020. Detail of a maple tree in our back yard. Beautiful day today, but with Emma getting The Operation and our getting groceries, there was no time for cycling after work. Still, I was outside enough to at least enjoy the weather. And there's going to be another week of this. Joy. https://flic.kr/p/2j4ovzi

Waiting

Image
May 20, 2020. I was out for a quick bike ride again after work (one of the benefits of not commuting) and spotted this guy just hanging out in a field. Today was fully focused on the ethics paper (and specifically, studying librarian codes of ethics). https://flic.kr/p/2j44WPy

St. Albert Cow

Image
May 19, 2020. I was still feeling a little under the weather but I convinced myself to take a brisk 24km ride after work and I felt a lot better after. Here's a mural from the side of L'École élémentaire catholique Saint-Albert. Work today was a meeting and training for evaluating innovation program funding proposals (I actually enjoy evaluating funding proposals; they give me a glimpse into what people are up to). https://flic.kr/p/2j3M3rR

Tulips

Image
May 18, 2020. I woke up still and sore from biking, took a pain pill and a nap and ended up with a sore stomach that felt like heartburn. I got a newsletter out but that's about it; good thing today was a holiday. These tulips are in our front yard, which was as far as I got today. https://flic.kr/p/2j3oGdp

Riceville

Image
May 17, 2020. I did a 52km loop through Riceville and St-Isadore today. It was warmer and brighter and more work. This is the Ladderarian cross halfway between the two towns https://flic.kr/p/2j35Js3

8600

Image
May 16, 2020. This is CP engine 8600 pulling a very long train through eastern Ontario near Avonmore. Today I caught up on some email and did a brisk 50k ride to Avonmone and back. https://flic.kr/p/2j2Gwx7

House Sparrow

Image
May 15, 2020. Cool and rainy today, nice for birds, less so for me. My new microphone arrived, so now I have good audio again. I played with some AI transcription, did my performance plan, updated the newsletter, read some stuff for ethics, and took some pitcures of birds. https://flic.kr/p/2j2tpna

Blackbird Singing

Image
May 14, 2020. It was a nice day today but I was a bit too busy to get out cycling. But at least I had a change to photograph this bird in the back yard. https://flic.kr/p/2j28GEA

Arcadia

Image
May 13, 2020. I spent the full day reading and summarizing JIME articles from their recent special issue. After that I went for a quick 24 km ride - my first of the year on the road bike. The title of the photo is from the Jeopardy episode. https://flic.kr/p/2j1QX5H

Mountain Ash Bud

Image
May 12, 2020. Today was a bit of a choppy day, as meeting days usually are. It was still cool outside (we've been setting record lows recently) and everything is just waiting. This is a mountain ash bud in our back yard. https://flic.kr/p/2j1qWRf

Woolly Mullein

Image
May 11, 2020. Another cool day, and I didn't make it beyond my back yard. The only new thing growing at the moment is this woolly mullein. Today I spent mostly on my ethics document. https://flic.kr/p/2j19Vt1

Early Spring Forest Flowers

Image
May 10, 2020. It wasn't snowing today so I was able to go for a bike ride. I took the gravel bike onto some new (to me) back roads and was rewarded with a wealth of early spring forest wildflowers. A I finished the Tri-Council Research Ethics course today. https://flic.kr/p/2iZLJBz

Holding Fort

Image
May 9, 2020. I was up at 6 this morning to greet Adam from Velofix who came out in his mobile bicycle repair shop to do the annual tune-up for my bicycles. This is Lexi, also at 6, standing guard in the kitten fort and making sure kittens don't get extra attention. It was another indoor day, with snow outside, so I worked on my ethics paper all day. https://flic.kr/p/2iZk6fN

Sleeping

Image
May 8, 2020. This is Charlemagne. He had The Operation yesterday, and has been recovering for the last 24 hours. For myself, today was doctor appointment day, which was done over the phone. The weather was cold and miserable, with snow, so there was no cycling. https://flic.kr/p/2iZaY6Z

Snowbirds

Image
May 7, 2020. Today the Canadian precision flight team called the Snowbirds flew by Casselman as part of their cross-Canada morale-boosting tour. Do you see that tiny dot with the stream behind it? No, that's not it, it's a kite. But below that, do you see the five dots in formation? No, not that either, they're birds. And that was our fly-by. Clouds and, well, that's it. Oh. The joy. https://flic.kr/p/2iYGbfQ

Hyacinth

Image
May 6, 2020. We're not sure it's a hyacinth, but for now, it's the only flower in our front yard. Today was a mis-mash of ethics, newsletter, and other tasks, along with various comments to posts, and a quick trip to Costco. https://flic.kr/p/2iYG7hj

Sprint Growth

Image
May 5, 2020. Cool and clear, with a sign of sprint in the trees. Today was meeting day, which always leaves me a bit drained (this happens in person too). Taking a research ethics course. https://flic.kr/p/2iYDftc

Geranium

Image
May 4, 2020. Just a dull day, cold and rainy, too many Star Wars references. Normally by now I'd be planning and looking forward to summer vacation, but not this year. I'm hoping we at least get summer, but who knows? https://flic.kr/p/2iYFUwF

Taking Off

Image
May 3, 2020. There was a stiff breeze today making biking diffifult, and the fresh gravel on the back roads can be traveled only by the slow gravel bike, but it's all worthwhile for photos like this. https://flic.kr/p/2iXiCWh

Larose Forest East

Image
May 2, 2020. I had a great day today. In the morning I wrote a big new chunk of my ethics book. In the afternoon it was a 40 km ride on the gravel bike over gravel, dirt, mud, etc., in the east Larose forest (it doesn't appear on maps, but it's a bug stretch of Larose east of the Nation River). https://flic.kr/p/2iWPM1b
