Home Again

Image
May 27, 2019. Back home for a day of rest and recovery from jet lag after an evening flight from Vancouver. These tulips greeted me on the front lawn. https://flic.kr/p/2g5up5a

Gift

Image
May 26, 2019. Spent the day flying back from Vancouver to Ottawa. This is the speaker's gift from the CNIE conference (which is really quite something). https://flic.kr/p/2g3SRib

Vancouver - Kitsilano

Image
May 24, 2019. Day 3 of the conference wrapped up at midday and or the afternoon I wandered around Vancouver's Kitsilano district, ending up at Granville Island. Flickr .

UBC

Image
May 24, 2019. Conference Day spent on the UBC campus.

I'm On a Boat

Image
May 22, 2019. Gave my talk this morning and spent the rest of the day conferencing. Then visited Jon Dron's boat on False Creek with some friends, sampling fine scotch and white IPA.

Room with a View

Image
May 21, 2019. This is the view outside my room at UBC in Vancouver. I spent most of the day in that room resting up and preparing for my talk tomorrow.

Vancouver - Wreck Beach

Image
May 20, 2019. Got up at five this morning, drove the truck into the airport and caught a WestJet flight to Vancouver. Took a nap, then walked from my room at UBC down the hill to Wreck Beach - as you can see, it was cold and rainy and the beach was bare. But I did take some lovely photos of the wildlife. https://flic.kr/p/2eztj4k

Cattle Castle

Image
May 19, 2019. Today it' known as the Aberdeen Pavilion, but when I worked at Lansdowne Park in the 1970s it was known as the Cattle Castle. We drove into the airport, rented a truck, when to TD Place, visited the Farmer's Market (and aforementioned building), watched the Avengers movie, drove back to Casselman, picked up a heavy an oversized mirror I bought while biking the day before, and returned home. https://flic.kr/p/2eLF7QN

Isolated

Image
May 18, 2018. I got out on the bicycle today for a 47km ride to St. Isadore and back, taking some side trips on some back roads. Nice ride; it felt good, though it was still too cold. https://flic.kr/p/2fX483B

Too Cold

Image
May 16, 2019. Since Monday is a work day, my long weekend started today. Other than being able to sleep in, I didn't get much out of it. Stayed indoors all day, except for a quick Costco run. https://flic.kr/p/SbtJJR

Base on an Extreme Planet

Image
May 16, 2019. I've been stranded on an extreme planet for several days now - not because I can't leave, but because I need to survive several days to satisfy a quest. Survival is no problem (I've only played more than 300 hours of No Man's Sky) but what to do? I hunted storm crystals until I got tired of it, then worked on my Extreme Planet Base, which is my best base yet. Oh yeah, I also finished a paper and sent it off for publication. https://flic.kr/p/2fWNKEV

Trillium

Image
May 15, 2019. This is Ontario's provincial flower and they're in full bloom right now in the forest down by the river. Today was slow - a dental appointment to start the morning, then working on the paper in the afternoon, with a 12km short bike ride over lunch. https://flic.kr/p/2fQufu3

May Flowers

Image
May 14, 2019. We're not sure exactly what these are (and yes, we searched) - are they lilies? Scilla? Chinodoxas? No idea. I hope the fly (disguised as a bee) knows. Anyhow, they're growing in the front garden. No progress on the paper today - had a long staff meeting and other conversations. All good; no stress. https://flic.kr/p/2eGL4y1

Ash Flower

Image
May 13, 2019. Another scene from our backyard, as the trees are finally turning green. I spent the entire day working on a paper about badges and blockchain. https://flic.kr/p/2euV9Ce

Sunday Ride

Image
May 12, 2019. Went for a shortish 38km ride to St. Isadore (where this river crosses the highway) and back. The less said about the Blue Jays game the better. I also edited and uploaded all the photos from yesterday - click here to view the set https://flic.kr/p/2eFmA9y

One of Many

Image
May 11, 2019. We went to the Chefs Paradise for breadmaking supplies, visited the tulip festival, and had supper with family in the ByWard market. A typical Ottawa day. https://flic.kr/p/2eF5ja1

Alex

Image
May 10, 2019. It's always hard to get the attention of a sleepy cat, and Alex is the sleepiest. It's probably because he's up at night trying to eat my hair. Good day overall today, with some editing, some project review work, and some reading. Just like yesterday. https://flic.kr/p/THW1fA

Posing

Image
May 10, 2019. This is Lexi assuming her "I'm so cute" pose as I take her photo. Did some project review work, more editing on a collaborative article, and some reading. https://flic.kr/p/THVPku

Goldfinch in Flight

Image
May 8, 2019. It's virtually impossible to get a photo of a goldfinch, let along one of a goldfinch in flight, but I got lucky with this shot of one in our backyard today. Another day spent working on the paper collaboration, and also, I picked up my new pair of glasses (yay!). https://flic.kr/p/2erBgw8

Angus

Image
May 7, 2019. Spotted these angus cows on the way home today. Future angus burgers, I thought (I have no idea whether this is true; they may be show cows for local Highland games). I spent most of the day working on a paper collaboration, plus a little time at a meeting. https://flic.kr/p/2fQzgEi

Think Safety!

Image
May 6, 2019. These signs popped up all over the NRC campus today. Meanwhile, I had a surprisingly busy day, welcoming a new co-op student, getting a new ID badge, and updating a funding proposal review. https://flic.kr/p/2fKYgff

Hyacinths

Image
May 5, 2019. These hyacinths are the first flowers to make an appearance in our garden this year. It was finally a beautiful sunny day today (which I spent resting and watching the ball game). https://flic.kr/p/25cXn2a

Willow Flowers

Image
May 4, 2019. Got out for my first 50km bike ride of the season. Cold and cloudy. But there are signs of spring, like these willow flowers along the road. https://flic.kr/p/TDQDsC

Algonquin Park

Image
May 3, 2019. Today was spent driving home from Barrie. This is just inside the west gate. Another first for me - the first time I've been to Algonquin Park. https://flic.kr/p/2eo6aWD

Orillia

Image
<ay 2, 2019. Started the day by completing my newsletter, then went back to Borden for the tech Expo, then drove up to visit Orillia, which I had also never seen before. Made it an early evening. https://flic.kr/p/S1ypT4

Barrie

Image
May 1, 2019. This is downtown Barrie - my first visit to the city. I spent the day at Base Borden at a learning innovations conference, and in the evening we went to a microbrewery called Flying Monkeys. https://flic.kr/p/2fL8Sxk

The Road to Borden

Image
April 30, 2019. This is a scene somewhere past Perth on the road to Borden, a Canadian Forces base north of Toronto, near Barrie, where I'm talking tomorrow. This drive followed this morning's doctor's appointment. Check-up. All good so far. https://flic.kr/p/RZCc3x
