Milkweed

Image
April 22, 2019. One of a set of nine photos from my bike ride. All the photos from today were taken from the exact same spot on the road, where I took my break, nowhere near any town. Here's my biking set. https://flic.kr/p/Tug3Wd

My Mother

Image
April 21, 2019. In the aftrenoon I went for a bike ride - photos here and then in the evening got together with family - photos here. https://flic.kr/p/2fCir9H

Northern Flicker

Image
April 20, 2019. Spent the day indoors working on a scraper for gRSShopper and adding chapters to my upcoming ebook. Meanwhile, the songbirds are flocking to our backyard, joined by this Northern Flicker. https://flic.kr/p/2eekfGB

Alex Helps

Image
April 19, 2019. I finished a paper today with plenty of help from Alex. He wasn't as interested in the ball game after as I was. Still, he fits perfectly in my home office. (I like the light in this photo) https://flic.kr/p/RPX6TB

Ordinary

Image
April 18, 2019. I was sitting at the mall waiting while my snow tires were changed and I looked at the scene and thought "nobody ever takes pictures of the ordinary and mundane, like this parking lot." So I did. https://flic.kr/p/Ts4yqQ

Vine

Image
April 17, 2019. This is a vine along the fence-line on the train tracks in front of the house. You can see the trunk and branch structure really clearly - this is obscured when it has leaves. Wrote a scraper for gRSShopper over the last couple of days and am using it to create reference lists for my blog posts. https://flic.kr/p/2ebvUUr

Roof Repairs

Image
April 16, 2019. We had some patches applied to our roof in advance of what are likely roof repairs. You can see where we lost a large chunk of shingles. We're hoping insurance will cover it. A new roof, by the way, costs a *lot* of money. https://flic.kr/p/2fuKtKG

Controller

Image
April 15, 2019. Coming home from what turned out to be an unpleasant day at the office I spotted this controller (drone? racing car?) just sitting by itself on the cement wall. Nobody else in sight. https://flic.kr/p/TqP7hG

Monk

Image
April 14, 2019. Today's weather was cold and rainy, so no biking today - I stayed inside and wrote a couple of articles instead, one on the carbon tax, and another on the concept of value. Also watched the Blue Jays game, but we're not talking about that. This monk sits on my office desk at home and is my stern taskmaster. https://flic.kr/p/24Vy1HB

Spring Ride

Image
April 13, 2019. It was warmer and sunny today, so I was able to get out for my first bike ride of the season. It was also really windy, so it wasn't as pleasant as you might think. This is a scene from the ride to St. Albert and back - 14 km each way, though Strava recorded it as a 15km as-the-crow-flies trip (at about 250 km per hour). Having issues with my GPS, I think. My target for this year is, as usual, 2000 kilometers (I did 2100 last year and 1600 the year before). https://flic.kr/p/RKXUkD

Activité de réseautage

Image
April 12, 2019. I was up early for this networking event at Université de Montréal. It was, as the title suggests, held entirely in French - still a challenge for me, but I was able to participate OK, including giving a short impromptu presentation about my work. https://flic.kr/p/2fwc1vH

Snowbound

Image
April 11, 2019. I went to Montreal in the evening to be there for an early morning event. During a short walk around the hotel I spotted this poor gnome, head in hand, sitting and waiting for the snow to go away. https://flic.kr/p/Tnz8Qh

Domlasoul

Image
April 10, 2019. This picture is from York Street downtown where I ran an errand today. I also got a funding review completed and an ethics final report submitted. So, overall, a productive day. I think yesterday's baseball game (Lordes Gurriel stole *home* in a win against the Red Sox) just put me in the right frame of mind. https://flic.kr/p/2ep9dvU

Snow

Image
April 9, 2019. As I watch another snowstorm outside the window I would like to remind people that back on February 2, some 10 weeks ago, newspapers and media were reporting that a groundhog predicted a quick end to winter. Even the other groundhog that predicted 6 more weeks of winder was wrong. My first experience today was Alex whacking me in the eye, and it didn't get much better on what was overall a messed-up day. https://flic.kr/p/2fu3QH4

Freezing Rain

Image
April 8, 2019. The winter that Will. Not. End. has not ended. Today we got freezing rain. I retired my pepper plants today - they had basically been cooked by the malfunctioning radiator. Spent most of the day reading the ADL report on learning ecosystems. Great stuff. Also did my performance review self-evaluation (I did exactly what I said - don't know if I can do that two years in a row). https://flic.kr/p/TkBrT9

Blue Jays

Image
Aorul 7, 2019. The blue jays arrived in our back yard today. Not a very good photo, but they were far away and I shot it through a dirty window. Watched the ball game in the afternoon and had a birthday pizza in the evening with family. https://flic.kr/p/2enq7hw

The Neighbour Cats

Image
March 24, 2019. The neighbour cats have been skittish for the last three years but they've become comfortable on our back deck and made friends with our cats through the window. https://flic.kr/p/2e48xaR

Hunting

Image
March 31, 2019. This is the neighbour cat hunting in the snow in the back yard. Shot through a dirty window in snow or drizzle. Winter has been hanging on, making me depressed, and I've lost the will to photograph it. I'll get it back, but I've missed some days. https://flic.kr/p/2fs26t2

Di-Octo

Image
March 26, 2019. This is the Di-Octo Sculpture at Concordia University (Hall Building, the old Sir George Williams campus) in downtown Montreal. We were out shopping between ball games in the big city. https://flic.kr/p/2em57ky

Montreal Downtown

Image
March 25, 2019. This is downtown Montreal as seen from our hotel, looking straight down Saint Catherine Street. We were here for the two Blue Jay's spring training games. https://flic.kr/p/RFAuK8

Tracks

Image
March 21, 2019. Still desperately waiting for spring. Spent more time working on my paper, attending a meeting, and watching the Jays get pummeled. Sigh. https://flic.kr/p/2dT4pqk

Waiting...

Image
March 20, 2019. Another day spent working on my paper, punctuated by a wistful look at my bicycle, waiting for the spring. Which should be today! In related news, I put a bid on a trail bicycle, the first step in an ambitious adventure. More to come. https://flic.kr/p/2dT4cmR

Winter Scene

Image
March 19, 2019. It's hard to believe, but this wintery wilderness scene was photographed in late March just a couple hundred feet from the back door of the building where I work. I took it on my noon-hour walk, a break as I work on a new publication. https://flic.kr/p/2fcgxY9

Bearbrook Church

Image
March 18, 2019. After a day spent working on a new publication, I decided to take the slow road home, driving down Russell Road instead of the highway. Part of the reason was to find a good photo for the day, which I found here with this little church in Bearbrook. https://flic.kr/p/2faBgts

Thunderbird

Image
March 17, 2019. This is Andrea's coffee mug. I bought a pair of them years ago while in B.C. but while beautiful they weren't well-made, and so mine became unusable. I'll look for more when I'm in B.C. in May. Meanwhile, today was another day of rest and baseball-watching. Spring will be here soon, and I'll be able to rest on my bicycle. https://flic.kr/p/2dRoZ6R

Smith & Ives

Image
March 16, 2019. This is the clock in our kitchen. Andrea bought it for my birthday in 2006. Today was a rest day; I watched the ball game on the computer and took a long nap in the afternoon. https://flic.kr/p/RtznSV

Fabs

Image
March 15, 2019. This is the Canadian Photonics Fabrications Centre, aka the C-wing of the building where I work. I was going for the classic puddle reflection, but it wasn't really bright enough to work. Spent the day finishing up the finding proposals and (of course) producing a high-quality newsletter. https://flic.kr/p/RtzfDr

Geraniums in the Window

Image
March 14, 2019. Staff meeting in the morning, funding evaluations in the afternoon, geraniums in the window. Just a regular workday. https://flic.kr/p/24Cr1J4

March Snow

Image
March 13, 2019. I finished my critique of the ICDE Ethics in Learning Analytics document. Meanwhile, it snowed outside, which is not what I like to see in mid-March. https://flic.kr/p/T2XTsU

Looking Down the Road

Image
March 12, 2019. This is looking at the NRC administration building from the 2nd floor cafeteria in M-51. I spent most of the day analyzing and working on a critique of ICDE's document on ethics in learning analytics. https://flic.kr/p/2e5fhrw

Behind the Tims

Image
March 11, 2019. Spent the morning at a Kubernetes presentation and then reworked my Start Page in the afternoon. Felt stressed all day so I had some donuts at Tim's on the way home. I shouldn't, because they add weight, but they do help with stress. As I waited in line I was thinking that the Tom's looks very neat and orderly. As it should. https://flic.kr/p/2e5f7Cd

Polly At the Stairs

Image
March 10, 2019. Cats love routine. Even shy skittish cats like Polly. These days, every time I go down the stairs, she sets up by the railing to get petted while I'm on the way down. So there I am, head at floor level, on the stairs, petting Polly. Every single day we do this. Anyhow, I had a productive day reading the Kubernetes book and doing the examples. https://flic.kr/p/2f9wcBe

Fireplace

Image
March 9, 2019. This is the enclosed glass fireplace in the centre of the house, with the late afternoon sun streaming through it. It's really just a propane flame and we really never use it. But it looks nice. I was a little under the weather and took today as a rest day; I watched the Blue Jays game and took a nap. https://flic.kr/p/24x21Jx

Last Year's Leaves

Image
March 8, 2019. Struggling through to the end of winter; these last few weeks are always the worst. These leaves are hanging onto the oak near my office. I like taking photos of them but it's usually too cold. Today followed up on an interesting paper on consensus. https://flic.kr/p/2e1F2E1

Past the Point of No Return

Image
March 7, 2019. We're past the point of no return, said one of the workers as I watched them take apart this work station in M-55. The wires woven in an out of the concrete floor where what caught my eye. Did a project review today and followed up with some emails. https://flic.kr/p/24tPhQ2

Red Cross Chickadees

Image
March 6, 2019. The main cost of supporting Red Cross Alberta fire relief efforts wasn't the money, it was the steady pulse of follow-up mail from the Red Cross asking for even more money. They are very creative and in this envelop I opened today included a pair of chickadee coasters. https://flic.kr/p/RjVv92

Snow Squalls

Image
March 5, 2019. Another day, another presentation. Got into the office relatively early and got to work compiling notes for my Creative Commons talk on the future of OER. This time I made extra-certain that the audio would record (and made a backup recording as well). By the time I looked up the relatively nice weather of the morning had descended into snow squallys for the drive home. https://flic.kr/p/2dFCyyr

Decaf

Image
March 4, 2019. I spent the morning putting notes into my connectivism slides, then I gave the presentation in early afternoon. The audio failed, so I had to re-record the presentation on my own after in order to create the audio and video. Long day. This is the exit from the Timmies where I stopped for a decaf on the way home; you can see the snow accumulation pretty clearly. https://flic.kr/p/2dFCnKH

Alex

Image
March 3, 2019. I spend another day on the connectivism presentation, finishing up the reading and making slides. More No Man's Sky in the evening, aided here by Alex in his usual spot between human and screen. https://flic.kr/p/2eZQoxw

Lexi

Image
March 2, 2019. This was another good day to work indoors all day, and so I did, digging through papers from the last year talking about connectivism. After that play some No Man's Sky and took a photo of Lexi. https://flic.kr/p/SVWmkm

Logging Truck

Image
March 1, 2018. I on't like logging trucks because they're too large, drive too fast, and drop bits of bark and whatever behind them. But as I followed this truck I admired the high quality wood (looks like pine) and thought about how much I like wood. So it's a trade-off, I guess. https://flic.kr/p/SVVZjd

Office Farming Update

Image
February 28, 2019. As you can see, I can now grow thumbnail-sized red peppers. The problem is that the header fan doesn't work, to the plants literally bake. So they dry right out. Anyhow, I did my presentation this morning; it went well, I thought, and got some administrative stuff done in the afternoon. https://flic.kr/p/SQvk7Q

String Time

Image
February 27, 2019. The joke is that it's *always* string time. Put the finishing touches on my presentation, built a blockchain wallet from source (someone else's code, not mine) and had a generally good day. https://flic.kr/p/SQvbkb

Alarm Bell

Image
February 26, 2019. No, we didn't have a fire drill. But when we do, this bell is very very loud. And I always look at it each day thinking 'maybe today is the day it will be photo of the day'. I did have a good day today, very productive, working on my presentation slides. https://flic.kr/p/2dzQxb8

RedBlacks

Image
February 25, 2019. This is our Ottawa Redblacks blanket, tossed over a chair and ready for use. Less productive today https://flic.kr/p/24mJJ6V

Dinner With Family

Image
February 24, 2019. I spent the day working on Electron applications, including my slide show, and then in the evening Andrea and I had dinner with my mother, Bernie, and my aunt Marilyn (all named clockwise). https://flic.kr/p/24mJrWF

Memorial

Image
February 23, 2019. We went into the city today and while Andrea was in the mall I took a few photos downtown, including this one from the Canadian War Memorial. https://flic.kr/p/2ePuS79

St. Andrews

Image
February 22, 2019. The trip home, again by train. This is St. Andrews on King Street, with Roy Thompson Hall in the background, seen as I made my way to Union Station. https://flic.kr/p/24hkH1D

Old City Hall

Image
February 21, 2019. I spent the day at the Big Data Challenge in Toronto, then walked back through the Lawrence Market and then along Queen Street, where I took this photo of Toronto's old City Hall. All photos on this trip were with my old beat-up Sony Car Zeiss (the best camera is the camera you have). https://flic.kr/p/R8pUsx

Tuba

Image
February 20, 2019. Arrived in Toronto and went for a walk along Queen Street. At one point I peered inside a window to watch this tuba band. It was a long day with a morning meeting and a 5-hour train ride. https://flic.kr/p/24hjEBT
