Smoker

Image
September 30, 2016. This guy is on display in one of the first floor offices in the back of the building where I work. I pass by every day hoping it's not a real skull. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2dGa6Tm

Red Berries

Image
September 29, 2016. No idea what these are, but I saw them on my lunchtime walk through a small bit of forest. Accomplishments: - completed time sheets - wrote 'Open Resources in the Future' (3 pages) From Flickr http://ift.tt/2dhQky1

Sedum

Image
September 28, 2016. Another gorgeouus fall day. These are thriving in the gravel right next to the back wall of the house. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2duzZca

Ottawa River

Image
Septemnber 27, 2016. Still under the weather but managed to make it into the office, give a short talk, and have a meeting. I was also able to get out during a simply gorgeous noonhour day to walk along the Ottawa River for a bit. Accomplishments: - presented & uploaded 'A Timeline' From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cJkE5j

Mona Lisa Front and Back

Image
September 26, 2016. My ill health lingers but I made it into the office for a full day, getting some travel work done, reading an issue of IRRODL, and preparing for a short talk about myself tomorrow. I also spent a couple hundred of my hard-earned dollars on xSplit (because I can't bear the pain of trying to get a software purchase approved by three layers of management and provisionsed (incorrectly) by Share Services Canada). Anyhow, this is the Mona Lisa (a copy, obviosly) on display in the Cisti building (that's how far I could walk today, maybe 500 feet). From Flickr http://ift.tt/2dfhJSW

Migration

Image
September 25, 2016. Still too sick for much of anything, though I got a little work done on presentation pages while I was watching the ball game. These are migrating geese passing by late this afternoon. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2dc4Zfw

Access Way

Image
September 24, 2016. They've been building an access way over the railway tracks to build the new subdivision on the other side. You can see our house in the background of this photo. The original plan would have seen it right in front of the house but at the last minute they changed it. No idea why. All in all I think this is a good thing though. Still pretty sick; too bad it's a beautiful Saturday, I'd rather be cycling. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cBGis7

Fallen Leaf

Image
September 23, 2016. Still really under the weather but managed to drag myself into the office. Worked on fixing presentation pages all day. Saw this leaf on the way out. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cBHCuP

Vase

Image
September 22, 2016. Still sick. Took a picture of a blue jay in the back yard, but there was no card in the camera. Here's a vase. Went back to bed. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cBGXK9

Lexi Drinking from the Tap

Image
September 21, 2016. Sick day. Did nothing. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2d0VaB1

Pengo

Image
September 20, 2016. Pretty under the weather today but I managed to get my lunchtime walk in past this wonderful lawn decoration and to update dozens of presentation pages on my website. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2df3Wcw

Foggy Morning

Image
Septemnber 19, 2016. The camera is still wet from Saturday, and the water has seeped into the display. Fortunately the picture is not affected; it really was this foggy this morning. More, actually. Accomplishments - clean new responsive style for presentation pages (now have to edit all the presentations to make it work) From Flickr http://ift.tt/2dceBoi

Polly

Image
September 18, 2016. Today I took a day of rest - a.k.a. playing No Man's Sky all day. Yep. All day. :) So you get a cat piucture today. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cjU4RE

Cambridge-Clarence Road

Image
September 17, 2016. I thought I could dodge the showers but ended up fully drenched today on a shortish 45 km bike ride through LaRose forest. But it wasn't too cold and I felt good through the whole ride so it was a great time anyway. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cP91dK

Fall Leaves

Image
September 16, 2016. What caught my eye about these leaves just outside my office was the way the yellow was etched against the blue sky and the way the seed pods were growing. All in all a beautiful vignette. Slow day today, a buit of fallout after the frenzy of yesterday. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cxrei1

Wild Grapes

Image
September 15, 2016. These wild grapes grow along one of the access roads at NRC. Notice how they're quite different from virginia creeper berry , with which they are sometimes confused. They're obviously thriving, which suggests to me thaat Ottawa has missed its calling as a potential wine region. Accomplishments: - completed a paper review for a journal - submitted my order for a new computer - wrote 'Institutions and Openness' From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cCa2nq

Metro

Image
September 14, 2016. An uneventful day today. Zero response to the article I spent all day yesterday writing. Life is like that sometimes. This is pour local Metro, where we got cabbage, roma tomatos, and maple syrup. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cZ1abj

Highway Scenery

Image
September 13, 2016. Got a bit off track today. No biggie. I was delayed this morning by hughway construction, but it gave me a chance to take this photo of the scenery along the way. Staff meeting, then I distracted myself reading proposals from the public on how to promote global science excellence. It was a good distraction though. Accomplishments: - wrote Global Science Excellence in Canada From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cdip9L

Asters

Image
September 12, 2016. I spent the day tallying the list of universities I've worked with over the last five years. This isn't so desolate as it sounds, as it gives me an opportunity to clean up the data in my presentation list and an excuse to create a new page format for them. These asters are thriving in our back ward (when I spend all day on a project you get back yard flower pictures). From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cndRxw

The Market

Image
September 11, 2016. The weather turned today, a couple weeks later than usual, and it was a cool and windy day. We went into the city to the ByWard market for a bit, toodled around Rideau Place, and I bought new shoes. Exciting. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cBUTTf

Rush City Road

Image
September 10, 2016. A 62 km run south of Avonmore to Rush City Road and the village of Newington. I felt good the whole ride, which is good, because the wind and rain were uncooperative. The yellow crop is probablky soybeans. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2ci34o5

A Plethora of Puffballs

Image
September 9, 2016. I thought at first I had a multitude of mushrooms, but my online reserach reveals them to be gem-studded puffballs (Lycoperdon perlatum). This healthy crop was observed on the path through the little wooded area next to NRC. These are apparently edible when young like this, though I would definitely not eat mushrooms I found growing in the woods. Accomplishments: - wrote 'My Waytershed Moments' From Flickr http://ift.tt/2c6PFSS

Pushing Through

Image
September 8, 2016. This is the back deck at our house, which will need staining next summer. Good day today. Got some writing done, and some coding for Ed Radio (almost done this little project). Accomplishments: - wrote 'Canadian Values' - coded YouTube MP3 conversion save as media for Ed Radio From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cmBxEI

Smiley

Image
September 7, 2016. Seen on my noon-hour walk. Worked on Ed Radio a bit today, researched for a paper for an IEEE conference, and had a dental appointment this morning. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2bV1f2b

Virginia Creeper Berry

Image
September 6, 2016. These are growing along the fence line by the railway outside our home. They look like grapes, but contain oxalic acid, which makes them toxic. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cbpV5J

Vesuvius

Image
September 5, 2016. Recovering from jet lag, watching the Jays lose, and breaking in my new mousepad - Vesuvius, by Warhol. Accomplishments: - uploaded photo sets From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cveLa6

Forbidden

Image
September 4, 2016. Flying home from Naples today. In the airport this morning looking for something to photograph - was given the 'no photos' look (I know it so well) in this shop, so of course I'm posting this here. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2caAFCQ

Conference Dinner

Image
September 3, 2016. Gave a presentation this morning as part of the MOOC conference. It was too long and I didn't capture exactly what I wanted to, but by th same token, with all the MOOC people in the room, it said some things that needed to be said. But I'm left with Mauro's comment in my mind - that I should come back next year wuith the evidence that what I propose works. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cazZgE

Mountain

Image
September 2, 2016. A full day at the MOOC conference, and then in the late afternoon we were able to take the lift up to the top of the mountain. The clouds were rolling in making for some spectacular views. I walked down from the mountain, with the result being some pretty sore calf muscles. The group then walked clear across the island for supper. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2bP0yCZ

Capri

Image
September 1, 2016. Took a good walk through Naples in the morning, then joined the conference crew to take the ferry to Capri (pictured) on our way to the conference opening in Anacapri. Good interesting mix of people involved in different MOOC initiatives. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2bSylRP

Naples

Image
August 31, 2016. Arrived in Naples, slept, had a pizza, slept. Actually a very comfortable flight; thanks Lufthansa. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2ciIZNZ

Baggage

Image
August 30, 2016. On my way to Italy. Looking out the window for a photo and couldn't resist the artistry of these baggage carts. From Flickr http://ift.tt/2cfdLsY
