One Last Look

Image
August 31, 2014. One last look at the ocean as we pack up the campsite for another year. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1qhFsRN

Baskets

Image
August 30, 2014. We stopped by at Island Traditions Store - with the big basket out front - near Richmond on highway 2. The baskets, I discovered, are actually made out of white ash, and consequently are much nicer than I had expected. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1nbp946

Andrea Looking for Fish

Image
August 29, 2014. Quiet day at the campsite. We walked up the coast to the creek, which was currently blocked by a sandbar, causing the fish in the stream to vacate and hide somewhere. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1qSpopn

Inuksuit

Image
August 28, 2014. People have alwways built inuksuit at North Cape but this year they proliferated in the hundreds for some reason ('inuksuit' is the plural of ' inukshuk ') Beyond you can see the famous kilometer long cap of North Cape, covered with seagulls, cormorants, and seals. from Flickr http://ift.tt/XYGDev

Oyster Creek Bridge

Image
August 27, 2014. View from the bridge as I cycled 120km to Richmond and back. This would be at the 99km mark of my ride. It's one of my favorite sights on the island and I always look forward to it. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1pq3JFP

Port Elgin

Image
August 26, 2014. Bridge in Port Elgin, a pretty little town we visited detouring around construction on our way into town to feed the cats. OK, it's not so pretty. But it could be! from Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephen_downes/14886754879

Harvest

Image
August 25, 2014. An Island farmer pilots his John Deere Harvester in a grain field just off Mill Road, one of the sights I was treated to on a quick 60km ride to O'Leary and back. Another sight was Hackeney Road, a PEI Heritage Road (ie, sandy and difficult to cycle), which took me to Mill Road. View Hackeney Road - http://ift.tt/1tFOF6g from Flickr http://ift.tt/1wx94zh

Miscouche

Image
August 24, 2014. The Church of Jean the Baptist at Miscouche, PEI. This is the church I tried to photograph the other day. Now, enjoying a day of rest after yesterday's ride, I was able to capture the image. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1wrK8cn

PEI Gran Fondo

Image

Northport

Image
August 22, 2014. A quick 30 km tune-up (@23kph) before tomorrow's big ride. This is Northport, just south of Alberton, a working port (as you can see) but also with a museum and pleasure boat moorings. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1vtbWZB

Jacques Cartier

Image
August 21, 2014. This is the statue of Jacques Cartier (and the PEI provincial flag) at our campsite (named Jacques Cartier Provincial Park) and the Gulf of St. Lawrence beyond. This has been our August home for the last five summers. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1wiDTHJ

Tignish

Image
August 20, 2014. I did a loop today that included the full length of Palmer Road (at last!) and most of Dock Road (73km @ 21kph). This is the St. Simon & St. Jude Church, a 19th-century Roman Catholic church in Tignish. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1piroac

Night Ocean

Image
August 19, 2014. This is the ocean I'm camping by in PEI. I had a beautiful photo of the church in Miscouche I thought I took on the way back from the city, but alas, no card in the camera (this is the Sony RX100 II camera's biggest weakness, it doesn't properly warn me I have no card in the camera and just lets me shoot as though there were). from Flickr http://ift.tt/1oV3N0j

Alberton

Image
August 18, 2014. Another day of inclement weather part of which was spent sitting on the poirch at Alberton Bakery watching the world go by. Alberton is the closest town to the campsite and I always enjoy visiting. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1p6uSN6

Palmer Road Church Fair

Image
August 17, 20114. Most days the Palmer Road Church stands by itself on a lonely corner in the North Cape, but during the annual fair it comes alive with hundreds of people, booths, music, food, and of course a dunk tank. Last year I missed it by one day cycling in the area; this year in chancy weather we drove to it. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1p6uVby

Confederation Trail

Image
August 16, 2014. Cycled the trail from Alberton through O'Leary to where it meets up with highway 2 - a big C-shaped route - then back up 12 to the campsite. 76 km @ 21 kph, pretty good considering the state of the trail, which is slowly being ruined by ATVers. Some beautiful sights along the way including this marsh near the narrowest point on Prince Edward Island, where it's less than 3 km from side to side. Nice ride, felt great after it. Trying to channel my good energy to the Blue Jays. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1sMcueX

Summerside in the Rain

Image
August 15, 2014. A rainy windy day which damaged our tent and drove us to spend the day in Summerside, where we enjoyed a full hour of sunshine before the skies opened up again. from Flickr http://ift.tt/XpxPOn

Richmond Dairy

Image
About 50 km south of our campsite is Rochmond Dairy, a nice bit of relief after two and a half hours of driving toward the campsite. What I like about it is that it's a throwback to the days when fast food chains didn't rule and the centre of town was an eatery on the outskirts. from Flickr http://ift.tt/YaqKkG

Nor Wester

Image
August 13, 2014. The Nor Wester chugs into Miminegash harbour to unload its catch. I cycled across the island to visit the port (55 km @ 20 kph (which includes a mistaken trip along MacKinnon Road, which as it turns out is more of an ATV trail, complete with mudholes)). from Flickr http://ift.tt/Y6nDKE

North Cape

Image
August 12, 2014. Rode up to North Cape on a wrm clear and slightly breezy day n the Island. 57 km @ 22.7 kph. Also: have successfully connected my computer to my mobile internet, so I can do things like upload this photo. No that's not me standing on the point, it's some guy who wasn't going to leave the frame, so I went with it - it's a better picture with him in it anyways. Yes, that's my new bike with its first obligatory travel photo. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1lSNzP8

The Campstead 2014

Image
August 11, 2014. Arrived at Jacques Cartier Provincial Park on the North Cape, our summer home where I recharge, get in a lot of cycling, and recomment to a slower and more pastoral way of life more attuned to my disposition. from Flickr http://ift.tt/Y0LN9m

The Bridge

Image
August 10, 2014. Finally on our way to PEI, about to cross the Confederation Bridge to the Island. The bridge is a marvel and it feels special every time I cross. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1oGNmP0

Parked

Image
August 9, 2014. Life goes on in my front yard - this fly (or something - it hovers like a helicopter) rests briefly on the petal of a brown-eyed susan. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1soLcem

La Pocatière

Image
August 8, 2014. An eleven hour drive home from Montreal, with a stop here along the St. Lawrence River. I'm going to be seeing tail lights in my dreams. In the meantime, the hills on the north shore, across the river, beckon. The call of unexplored territory haunts me. One day... from Flickr http://ift.tt/1phRlq6

Gananoque

Image
August 7, 2014. Gananoque town hall, where we took a break during a long drive from west of Toronto to east of Montreal. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1nxODaU

Pitcher

Image
August 6, 2014. Hutcheson pitches a gem, Bautissta hits a dinger, and Jays win! Jays win! Baseball is a story that unravels differently every night, pitting one player against another. In no team sport is the individual as isolated and alone as in baseball. from Flickr http://ift.tt/V3iS2m

Bautista

Image
August 5, 2014. Blue Jays game today, sadly not a very good game for the home side. Looking at Bautista's left foot makes me wince, though he's doing it every swing, so I guess it's OK. Tomorrow will be a better day... right? from Flickr http://ift.tt/1ukVMkm

Peaches

Image
August 4, 2014. Difficult drive to Toronto today with numerous long traffic jams on the 401. After one of them (seven cars had an accident on a bridge in a construction zone) we pulled off at bought some peaches at this roadside market in Belleville. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1v4eWPF

Miller Family Reunion

Image
August 3, 2014. My mother is from the Miller family of Clarenceville, Quebec, and we had a reunion today at her home in Embrun, Ontario, with her systers, some of my brothers, their assorted children, and other descendents and relatives of Donald and Irene Miller. It was really aa very nice time, the kids got along great, and it was nice to see some people I haven't seen for a long time, and even some I've never from Flickr http://ift.tt/1uZsQT8

Casse Croute

Image
August 2, 2014. On the way from New Brunswick to Ottawa we encountered this little brook beside the Casse Croute ice cream and burger stand overlooking the St. Lawrence River just east of Berthier-sur-Mer, Quebec. from Flickr http://ift.tt/1lnxYad

Fredericton

Image
August 1, 2014. Time for one last meeting before my vacation, this in Fredericton. Then on the road! from Flickr http://ift.tt/1xQWaas
