Flight to the Basket

January 31, 2014. Trevan Latham flies through the air on the way to scoring a basked for the Moncton Miraxcles agsinst the Ottawa Skyhawks. Fun fun game tonight after a few very busy days finishing the first draft of our implementation plan (that's what I'm doing these days instead of writing papers - it's different work, it's interesting, and it will pay off in the end).

Ron Roy

January 30, 2014. This is where I get gas. It's an Esso station a couple blocks from home. I'm a regular customer, but they might not know that, because I don't get gas very often. Nice bright day today, a chilly -11C but still the sunshine is a pleasant change.

Coffee Plant

January 28, 2014. The other day I showed you Destructor (aka Lexi the Cat) and told the story of the coffee plant she knocked over. Here is our poor tirtured coffee plant. It's at least five years old, probably more, and has suffered a lot over the years. But it's doing pretty well right now and I think being repotted will be the best thing for it.

Brown Ice

January 27, 2014. I drove Andrea to the dentist, which took me over the bridge into Riverview. What you are seeing in this photo is a view of downtown Moncton from Riverview, and the brown ice in the foreground is actually the frozen and churning Petitcodiac River.

January 26, 2015. So Lexi - introduced yesterday - is also known as "Destructor" around our house. Nine times out of ten, if we hear a crash in the other room, it was Lexi. Just so today, when she knocked Andrea's coffee plant off the top of the microwave. Hence this trip to MacArthur's, pictured, to get some potting soil to save the coffee plant. Happily it's that sort of lazy Sunday (I'm puttering with Work Breakdown Summaries and Gantt charts) that made the trip a nice break.

January 24, 2014. I'm still in Ottawa, attending Customer Relations Management training all day in the J.E. Brown building, or as it's known to all of us, M-55. It's the former CISTI building, and also houses the now empty offices of the NRC Research Press. This is the view looking north to the main entrance. Here is a view from the outside.

Deep Learning

January 23, 2014. I spent the better part of the day today watching Hugo Larochelle's presentation on deep learning. This is basically the use of neural networks to support unsupervised machine learning. The morning covered deep learning basics, and the afternoon looked at text analysis using deep learning. This was really good stuff. Some of the mathematics I couldn't follow, but I got the gist of most of it. And anyhow, he's placed a mountain of videos online.

January 20, 2014. I'm in Ottawa through the week so bought some groceries Monday evening to sustain me the rest of the week. This is that grocery order - fish, vegetables, and the rest. This represents $89 worth of groceries at the downtown Loblaws, and fit in one bag.

I Have an Editorial Comment

January 189, 2014. Back at home. This is Alex, who has an editorial comment (something along the lines of "You were gone and I diodn't get any fish.")

January 17, 2014. The view from my seat inside a Beechcraft flight from Halifax (hence the fog) to Moncton on my way home from Ottawa. Good meetings today, home for a couple opf days, and then back to Ottawa!

January 16, 2014. This isn't Montreal, it's Gatineau, as seen from the 11th floor of the hotel. But I spent the whole day driving to Montreal, having a meeting, and driving back again. 30 minutes on the stationary bike, and that's my day.

January 15, 2014. The obligatory photo of the Parliament Buildings from my first day in Ottawa for 2014. Today I'm here for meetings. I'll be in Ottawa quite a bit over the next few weeks.
